In the spring semester of the senior year, nursing students spend 84 hours at a hospital under the direct supervision of an experienced nurse preceptor for the purpose of facilitating the transition from student to professional registered nurse. With recommendations from the faculty clinical course coordinator, the students choose a hospital for this capstone senior clinical experience. In the past, clinical sites have included Mt. Sinai (New York City), Walter Reed Hospital (Washington D.C.), Bon Secours Hampton Roads Health System (Norfolk, Virginia), Long Island Jewish Medical Center (New York City), and Children’s Hospital (St. Petersburg, Florida). Many other sites have been used and new sites are contracted annually. Feedback from both students and hospitals has been very positive. Some students have been offered employment at the site of their transitional experience after graduation. |
