The Department of Nursing, as an integral part of Utica College, is committed to the mission of the College. The mission of the Department of Nursing is to offer professional nursing education for undergraduate, generic students and registered nurses pursuing a baccalaureate degree. This mission prepares our graduates to meet the challenges of professional nursing practice and strengthens the quality of nursing care rendered to the health care consumer in an age of health care reform.

In addition to this primary goal, the Department of Nursing is committed to providing service and education to the professional nursing community and the public.

To realize this mission, the Department of Nursing:

  1. provides generic students with content integrated in liberal arts and nursing education as a basis for practice as a generalist at the beginning professional level;
  2. provides registered professional nurses with nursing theory, knowledge, and clinical experiences to obtain a baccalaureate degree in nursing;
  3. operationalizes the nursing curriculum through a systems/adaptation approach to nursing practice in a variety of settings;

  4. provides students with a foundation for continued professional development and/or graduate study;
  5. provides students with the awareness and ability to address contemporary and future health care needs in a rapidly changing society in an age of health care reform;
  6. provides nurses in the community with a source for educational opportunities in order to increase their understanding and knowledge of current nursing practice and;
  7. maintains a leadership role in the nursing and health care communities.
