Carol A. Downing, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Communication

Dr. Carol Downing has been teaching at Utica College since 1985. She has been the Chair of the Department of Communication Arts since 2005. Her primary teaching areas are courses in oral performance. These courses include both introductory and advanced public speaking, oral interpretation of literature, and argumentation. She also teaches rhetorical theory and criticism, and developed a course in health communication that often attracts students in health studies as well as those majoring and minoring in communication. She has also taught courses in environmental communication and protest and reform rhetoric. In 1992, she was honored by Utica College with the Virgil Crisafulli Distinguished Teaching Award.
Dr. Downing received her BA and MA in Communication Arts at the University of Dayton. Her Ph.D. is from Ohio University with a focus in Political Rhetoric and Public Address. She enjoys living in the country where she can work in her gardens and spend time with her senior rescue dogs.
