Dr. Habbel’s areas of teaching and research include Interpersonal, Organizational, Political and Intercultural Communication, and Communication Theory. He has served as Chair of the Curriculum Committee, Chair of the Syracuse University Senate Committee on Diversity, and the Presiding Officer of the UC Faculty Senate. Dr. Habbel continues to be involved with diversity issues on the UC campus.
In 2005 he joined the CARE Team, a local citizen’s committee implementing an EPA grant designed to identify and prioritize environmental health risks in Oneida County. In 2007 he blogged in support of the Mid-York Library system’s community reading of Thomas Friedman’s “The World is Flat”. He served on the Board of Directors of Leadership Mohawk Valley from 2001 to 2011, and he designed and taught a Leadership Development module for the LMV Program Days during his time on the Board.
In the 90’s Dr. Habbel frequently served as a media pundit, providing analyses of cultural and political topics in the news. In 1998 and 2000 he worked as a compensated analyst for live election night coverage on WUTR-TV. In 2004 he helped create and run the “Miller for Congress” campaign. In 2006 he worked as a Senior Policy and Strategy Advisor with the “Arcuri for Congress” campaign, and in 2010 he served as campaign manager for the “Pavelock for Senate” primary campaign.
